Important concepts

Comprehension questions test how well you use evidence in a passage. Separate a fact stated directly from an inference supported by the text, and distinguish the central idea from an example or detail. Pay attention to the author’s purpose, tone, comparisons and the way one paragraph connects to another. For vocabulary-in-context questions, use the sentence and surrounding argument rather than the most familiar dictionary meaning. The safest answer is the one the passage supports, even when outside knowledge suggests something broader.
